Keeping up with the Open Access on-goings, I happened to come across some videos (and photos) from the Berlin 5 Open Access conference that took place in Padova, Italy in September. I was skimming through the presenters names, and noticed a name that struck me as familiar.

Gago…? Uhm… could it be Mr Mariano Gago? The Portuguese Minister of Science and Technology?

Guess what, it was and here’s the video (about 7 minutes long) where Minister Gago speaks about the importance of Open Access in scientific research and other aspects related.

And while I’m at it, I must say that I’m rather impressed by the quality of his spoken English.

I for one am proud that this is a matter being kept in focus by the Portuguese Government. I’d like to read a bit more about the Minister’s initiatives regarding OA here in Portugal. Anyone from my Portuguese readership want to point me in the right direction?

There are monthly video updates with roundups of the latest news from the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry presented as if a tv news broadcast.

A lot goes on in a month, so I suspect that these shows can run for quite a while. You can watch each episode entirely or watch separate segments of the episode at a time. Videos are available in WMP and Quicktime format, and feeds are available to keep up to pace.

If you missed my previous posts regarding video websites related to the life sciences take a quick look:

I’m a little late on this one, but I’d like to express my amazement by the way the great people at PLoS manage to disseminate scientific information. This time they’ve joined forces with a couple partners and put out what is now my favorite science video/screencast streaming website – SciVee (even though I’m pretty fond of bioscreencasts.com!).

I wrote about a couple of other video and screencast websites related to life sciences a while back (and even a science video search engine) but this is different.

This isn’t just a website where you can see a video or two of people extracting DNA from a banana peel, it’s an amazing resource that combines video to real research and even published work (here’s where PLoS kicks in!). You can hear it from the actual experts as they explain their work and findings. It’s devided into most of the PLoS categories we are all used to finding and above all, it’s open to all!

What isn’t so great is the site’s web design and color scheme. Starting from the forced web2.0 glossy logo to the bright colored links on white background, it is screaming for a quick redesign. What do you think? Do you share my opinion?

Well, today I found another site, but this one is a search engine of science videos in general. And it states that “every science video on ScienceHack is screened by a scientist to verify its accuracy and quality”!

So, if you can’t find what you are looking for over at the other sites I mentioned before, give ScienceHack.com a try.
I’ve tried it for a couple subjects and it returns a decent amount of results for each of them. Not bad at all!

With the growth and spreading of broadband around the globe, more and more high bandwidth, content rich sites have been popping up. One great example of this is Youtube!

Well, it’s good to see that the science community hasn’t kept behind and they have either used the services of these already large websites like Youtube and Google Videos, or have gone along and started their own smaller but more specific sites, namely DNATube and JoVE.

Youtube and Google Video are basically the same thing ever since Google acquired Youtube for a gazillion dollars. You can search for videos in both sites by using the Google Video search page.
Ok, so some searching at these two giants can render you some great videos related to the life sciences, from lab techniques to animations of the inner cell works to home/class-made videos on biochemistry.

If you don’t want to search and find, you can give DNAtube a try and browse through their available videos. They are obviously all related to the life sciences, in particular DNA!

And then there is JoVE, the Journal of Visualized Experiments, that describes itself as “an online research journal employing visualization to increase reproducibility and transparency in biological sciences”.

JoVE is currently in it’s 4th issue and there is some cool videos regarding microbial communities.

Ok, so that is just a small pick of video meets life sciences round up in 4 websites. There are certainly more. Much more…

Now, although videos are cool, one thing that us internet/computer users enjoy are screencasts. And if the screencasts are related to science software, then that makes it even cooler!

So, tipped by Deepak over at bbgm I’ve found out about Bioscreencast.
Basically, it’s youtube-stlye science related screencast website. They describe and explain what it is as follows:

Bioscreencast.com is a website that has video tutorials or screencasts for the biological sciences. Currently, these tutorials are created by researchers across various biology disciplines. Our goal is to build a community of life science researchers and provide a platform to share knowledge on usage of tools that aid research.

Although there are other screencast websites, this one seems to be the first one I’ve found dedicated to biological sciences and related fields. So, thumbs up to that.
