My internet connection was far from stable today so I gave the connection a time-out, opened up my image editor of choice and put a little something together for my iPod Touch.

Based upon the DNA Network logo I created about 2 years ago, here are 4 color variations of the same wallpaper for anyone to use on their iPhone or iPod Touch.

I’ve updated the science logo and icons page but here’s the direct download link just in case.

Fold it – Solve puzzles for science

Jason from Free Genes pointed me in the direction of this cool project called Fold It that just caught my eye. It’s a game but it’s a game with serious impact.
Based upon a similar concept of grid processing like the protein folding project (folding@home) or the search for ETs (SETI@home), this new approach makes the collective effort of players directly impact the processing.
It’s as if Fold It is an upgraded version of folding@home with the extra special new feature called: human interaction.

The concept is quite simple at the gaming point of view where you try to make the protein fold in the best way possible with points being given for stability through hydrogen bonding, compacting, hydrophobic and hydrophilic positioning of lateral protein chains, etc
The “better” you fold your protein, the more points you achieve.

These conformations are registered by the software and then processed furthermore thus contributing to the overall effort of predicting protein folding and therefore solving puzzles for science!

I’m not sure how this one got past me unnoticed. My Biotech Life turned 1 year old on the 18th!

So, the next drink you pick up is (or should be!!!) to congratulate this event! Even if it’s your morning coffee! :)

I’m going to think up something neat to celebrate the first 12 months here on the site. If anyone has a suggestion, please do tell.
Meanwhile, I’m going to catch up with emails and start bringing this blog back to life.

Science + Fun = Biocomicals

There are a lot of different ways to make science more fun, and one that I certainly enjoy are cartoons and comics. Guess it’s my childish gene in action!

Some comics are a bit technical and some are just not funny, but these cool illustrations at Biocomicals Cartoons are pretty funny.
