I was talking to a friend of mine about recent projects and internships and close to the end of our conversation I was left thinking about what we had been discussing.

I was wondering about the work we do over the course of our 5 (five!) year biotech engineering degree, and who does it belong to. I’m not really interested in the small projects where we study microbial growth or what type of fluids are Newtonian and such.

I was thinking about our final project that we do towards the end of our degree as a group and the written project we produce (by ourselves) for our internship.

Say I was studying something that just happened to be worth publishing and even patenting, who’s project is it? Is it mine or the University’s? Or do we both get credit?

It comes to mind because I know someone that has just finished a study that seems to have come up with good results in a field that has not been very well researched and could even use it as a doorway into the job market. So, can this person present this work as their own?

This probably differs from place to place, but I would like to know your opinion.
