Bathroom biotech
Last year I had the pleasure of listening to a successful portuguese biotech entrepreneur speak about his rise and one thing seemed a bit out of place. I mean, I just couldn’t understand how I can also be such a forward thinker and not grasp how he made it.
As it seems, he started offering his biotech services from the comfort of his home, more precisely his bathroom. He did some type of work in his bathroom and soon later took the next step and started renting out time in university labs nearby.
Ok, so my question is: What kind of services could he have performed in his bathroom that someone would be willing to pay for?
I’m not saying that he’s not good at what he does, but the bathroom isn’t really the best place to ensure steril and precise results, right? Or is there something I’m missing here?
We all know that there are a couple experiments we can do from home for the fun of it, but it’s beyond me how the guy started up from his home bathroom. Any ideas?

I can only think of a few biotech companies in Portugal :). Maybe he converted the bathroom into a mini-lab.
I was recently reading an article about the biotech center in Cantanhede called Biocant and the administrator was talking about the fact there is about 50 companies in Portugal and that the it could still handle a couple more…
Anyhow, even if he did transform the bathroom into a mini-lab, what type of work could he perform there that he could “comercialize”?
